The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the commencement of large-scale renovation works at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, urging travellers to plan ahead as the 22-month project begins.
In a travel advisory released in Lagos, FAAN advised passengers to leave early for the airport to avoid missing flights, obey traffic instructions around the airport complex, and use only designated car parks.
The Authority also cautioned that due to limited space, only travellers should access the airport during the period of construction.
“We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we carry out this critical transformation,” FAAN stated.

₦712bn Lagos Airport Terminal Transformation

The renovation forms the backbone of the recently approved ₦712.2 billion Lagos airport terminal transformation, which represents nearly 80% of FAAN’s national aviation upgrade budget of ₦919.1 billion.
The project, driven by FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku and supported by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, will see Terminal 1 completely rehabilitated and expanded, while Terminal 2 will be upgraded to handle wide-body aircraft with new boarding bridges and apron facilities.
Other highlights include:
* A new road network to ease airport traffic congestion.
* Construction of a Skywalk linking the multi-level car park to Terminal 2.
* A connection building to unify Terminals 1 and 2.
* A temporary departure hall of 8,000 square metres, designed to handle 1,500 peak-hour passengers with modern facilities including lounges, food courts, medical support, and accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility.

Arrivals will continue to be processed at Terminal 2, while departures move to the temporary hall. Clear signage and access roads will guide passengers through the transition period.

Raising Nigeria’s Aviation Profile

The Lagos airport project is part of a wider ₦919.1 billion upgrade that also covers runway rehabilitation in Kano and Port Harcourt, as well as enhanced security infrastructure at MMIA.
FAAN has pledged that the transformation will align Nigeria’s busiest airport with global aviation benchmarks, positioning Lagos as a competitive regional hub.
“We are not just upgrading,” said FAAN MD Olubunmi Kuku. “We are shaping a future-ready aviation experience worthy of Nigeria’s status in West Africa.”
