Today, Ethiopian Airlines announced a significant order for 67 Boeing jets, solidifying its longstanding partnership with the aerospace giant. The deal, signed at the Dubai Airshow, marks the largest-ever purchase of Boeing planes in African history.

According to Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, “We have reached a deal with Boeing to order 31 ultra-modern airplanes, with an option for 36 additional jets.” This strategic move supports Ethiopian Airlines’ growth plan and Vision 2035 Strategy.

Aircraft type & Specification:

The order includes 11 787 Dreamliner and 20 737 MAX aircraft, with an opportunity for 15 and 21 additional jets, respectively. The 787-9 Dreamliner, known for its 25% reduction in fuel use and emissions, aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ environmentally conscious decisions.

Moreover, the airline is embracing the 737-8 model, which reduces fuel use and emissions by 20%, while also minimizing noise by 50%. This commitment underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ dedication to environmental performance and passenger comfort.

With a current fleet of over 80 Boeing jets, Ethiopian Airlines aims to strengthen and diversify its fleet. Boeing will add the finalized 737 MAX order to its Order and Deliveries website. Additionally, Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines plan to collaborate on cabin modifications for the existing 787 Dreamliners, enhancing the passenger experience.

Boeing’s Brad McMullen praised Ethiopian Airlines for leading in expanding both the Dreamliner and 737 MAX fleets, showcasing exemplary leadership. He expressed appreciation for the airline’s confidence in Boeing’s products after more than 75 years of collaboration.

The 787-9 carries 296 passengers over 14,010 km; the 737-8 accommodates 210 passengers with a range of 6,480 km. Boeing’s Africa forecast projects 1,025 airplanes needed, mostly single-aisle. Africa’s air-traffic growth is projected at 7.4% through 2042, surpassing the global average growth rate of 6.1%.
