Ethiopian Airlines has commenced a new passenger service to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, effective June 1, 2025. The inaugural flight was marked by a colourful ceremony attended by ambassadors, Ethiopian Airlines executives, and senior government dignitaries from both regions.
This launch strengthens ties between Africa and the Middle East, opening wider travel and trade routes. Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier by destinations and fleet, will operate this service four times weekly.
The addition of Sharjah increases Ethiopian Airlines’ UAE network, offering another convenient travel option for leisure and business passengers. The carrier, known for its expansive African network and reliable service, aims to connect travellers seamlessly to Sharjah and beyond.
Group Chief Executive Officer Ethiopian Airlines, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, said the move reflects their commitment to enhancing regional access. He noted, “We are truly delighted to connect our passengers to an additional getaway in the UAE with our new flights to Sharjah. We have been connecting the UAE and Africa for nearly five decades now and the new service will help boost the investment, tourism, diplomatic and socioeconomic bonds between the two regions.”
Sharjah, the UAE’s third-largest emirate, holds strong appeal for business, education, and cultural pursuits. Often referred to as the country’s cultural capital, Sharjah has a vibrant heritage scene and has become a thriving industrial and educational hub.
Importantly, this emirate offers easy access to major international airports, positioning it as a valuable entry point into the Middle East. Ethiopian Airlines sees this new route as a strategic step in fostering bilateral engagements between Africa and the UAE.
Previously, Ethiopian Airlines had only provided cargo flights to Sharjah. However, this new **passenger service to Sharjah** expands the airline’s commitment to passenger convenience and regional growth.
Passengers flying on this route can expect world-class customer service and comfort aboard Ethiopian Airlines’ modern fleet. The airline has continually invested in cutting-edge technology and infrastructure to support its global expansion.
Sharjah is emerging as a top destination for eco-tourism and adventure travel. Growth in its tourism and hospitality sectors offers expanded opportunities in leisure, food, entertainment, and retail.
By bridging Ethiopia and Sharjah through direct air travel, Ethiopian Airlines underscores its role as a catalyst for economic development, tourism, and intercultural exchange.
