The unions, in a joint statement, called on the federal government to redefine Customs’ roles within bonded warehouses in civil aviation.
Aviation unions have raised concerns over repeated assaults on Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel by Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) operatives, demanding immediate intervention.
In a recent incident, Customs officers allegedly attacked the Director of Aviation Security Services at Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA). This has sparked outrage among aviation workers. Three unions—ATSSSAN, NUATE, and ANAP—have issued a 14-day ultimatum for the redeployment of the Area Controller, Pilgrims, and Cargo Terminal (PCT), alongside all officers involved.
The unions, in a joint statement, called on the federal government to redefine Customs’ roles within bonded warehouses in civil aviation. They emphasized the need for alignment with global standards. Additionally, they demanded a reduction in the number of Customs personnel at airports, citing international best practices.
They also urged the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with paramilitary agencies. This would clarify operational scopes and prevent future conflicts.
The unions warned of potential industrial unrest if their demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe. They stressed their commitment to protecting aviation workers and maintaining sector harmony.
“Aviation unions in FAAN have been alerted to yet another assault on the organization’s personnel by the Nigeria Customs Service. This time, it was a high-ranking official—the Director of Aviation Security Services at MMA,” the statement read.
The unions reiterated that unchecked aggression from Customs officers must end immediately. They called for swift action to restore peace and ensure the safety of AVSEC personnel.
