The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will fully implement a cashless payment system across all airports nationwide by February 28, 2026. This move is designed to improve operational efficiency, transparency, and revenue assurance while aligning with global aviation best practices.

Importantly, FAAN clarified that Paystack will serve only as a cashless payment system gateway for transactions, with no funds retained outside government accounts. This assurance addressed stakeholders’ concerns about third-party platforms and reinforced that all payments flow directly into designated Federal Government accounts.

During a meeting with the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), and Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), the Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, emphasised the importance of inclusive stakeholder engagement in this bold migration to cashless payment system migration. The discussions provided clarity on the discontinuation of cash transactions at airports.

Mrs. Kuku noted that the cashless payment system initiative follows a Treasury Circular dated November 24, 2025, signed by the Accountant General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi. The directive mandates the end of cash handling in all government dealings, reflecting the Federal Executive Council’s approval for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to cease physical cash collections.

She stressed, “There is no going back on this decision.” The reform will strengthen operational integrity, improve service delivery, and ensure robust revenue tracking at Nigerian airports. In addition, the initiative supports FAAN’s broader strategic goal of fostering trust and transparency with unions, concessionaires, and other partners.

Beyond regulatory compliance, the MD/CE outlined several advantages of the cashless system. These include reduced leakages, better transaction traceability, faster service, and enhanced public confidence in airport operations. Meanwhile, the stakeholders expressed satisfaction with the practical framework and FAAN’s proactive engagement approach.

A comprehensive briefing provided details on the smooth transition to cashless operations by February 28, 2026. This included POS terminal integration, transaction monitoring, and staff readiness programmes. FAAN’s emphasis on clarity and practical implementation reassured stakeholders that the reform is feasible and secure.

Mrs. Kuku reiterated that Paystack acts only as a transaction facilitator. No revenue will be deposited into any third-party account, ensuring full compliance with Federal Government financial regulations.

The February 28 launch of the cashless system marks a major milestone in FAAN’s reform agenda. It highlights the Authority’s commitment to modernising airport operations, promoting accountability, and engaging stakeholders collaboratively, positioning Nigeria’s airports as leaders in operational transparency and efficiency.
