The Asagba of Asaba, Professor Epiphany Azinge (SAN) OON, has called for the upgrade of Asaba Airport during a meeting with the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo during the recent meeting

He urged the Minister to expand flight operations, upgrade facilities, and position the airport as a transit hub for large aircraft. This push for the upgrade of Asaba Airport aims to boost economic and tourism activities in Delta State.  


The Asagba of Asaba, Professor Epiphany Azinge (SAN) OON, has called for the upgrade of Asaba Airport during a meeting with the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. The royal father emphasized the need to transform the airport into a regional aviation hub. This is according to the Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Tunde Moshood.  

Accompanied by a high-profile delegation, notably, Delta North House of Representatives member Hon. Ngozi Okolie Lawrence and prominent politician Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Abuah-Olejeme, the Asagba commended the Minister’s efforts in Nigeria’s aviation sector. He nevertheless, stressed the importance of increasing flight operations at Asaba Airport to reflect the city’s status.  

“Asaba is a city of great importance, and its airport should reflect this status,” the royal father stated. He urged the Minister to expand flight operations, upgrade facilities, and position the airport as a transit hub for large aircraft. This push for the upgrade of Asaba Airport aims to boost economic and tourism activities in Delta State.

Moreover, the Asagba also highlighted the growing pool of talented pilots in Delta State. Many youths have developed pilot training programs and require government support. He further appealed for Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to help them achieve their dreams of becoming professional pilots.  

In response, the Minister apologized for not visiting the royal father earlier. He acknowledged the meeting had long been on his agenda. Keyamo reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing the Asagba’s requests, emphasizing his role as a proud Delta son.  

On the upgrade of Asaba Airport, Keyamo agreed it should become the Eastern hub of aviation in Nigeria. He therefore, assured the royal father that discussions with airport concessionaires would be pursued. Additionally, partnerships with domestic and international airlines would facilitate interlining, enabling seamless travel from Asaba to global destinations.  

The Minister also expressed enthusiasm for engaging Delta’s aspiring pilots. In addition, he pledged to explore PPP models and other avenues to support their training and career development. 

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to advancing Delta State’s aviation sector. The Asagba’s delegation included Obi Chief Nwanze Oduah, Odogwu of Asaba, Obi C. Ajufoh, and other prominent leaders.
