The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have praised the Federal Government for suspending the controversial 4% FOB (Free on Board) levy on imports.
The group specifically commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, for the timely intervention.
According to AON, the 4% FOB suspension is a bold and thoughtful step that will protect aviation, jobs, and Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global business environment.
In a statement, AON described the suspension as an important decision that would ease inflationary pressure, safeguard critical industries, and provide relief to businesses already struggling with economic challenges.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the government to strengthen aviation and contribute to the realisation of President Tinubu’s broader economic vision.

The operators emphasised that the suspension of the 4% FOB levy reflects the President’s determination to create a business-friendly environment.
They explained that implementing the levy would have raised operating costs for airlines, further straining an industry already weighed down by high fuel prices, foreign exchange constraints, and multiple taxes.
According to the group, the 4% FOB levy, if enforced, could have led to higher ticket costs for passengers and possible job losses in the sector.
“This timely suspension ensures stability within aviation and shields the economy from unnecessary shocks,” the statement read.
AON particularly lauded the finance minister, describing him as a listening leader who has demonstrated responsiveness and deep patriotism.
The association noted that his decision to heed the concerns of industry stakeholders reflects the government’s sensitivity and commitment to fair governance.
“This action (4% FOB suspension) shows clear alignment with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and his pledge to make Nigeria an attractive hub for business and investment,” the operators added.
AON urged the government to sustain dialogue with industry stakeholders in order to craft long-term solutions that will enhance growth.
It also called for reforms to streamline taxes, improve foreign exchange access, and strengthen policies that support sustainable aviation development.
The association reiterated its belief that the suspension of the 4% FOB levy is only one step in a broader effort to stabilise the economy.
“We remain committed to working with the government to secure a stronger aviation industry that contributes significantly to Nigeria’s economic transformation,” the statement concluded.
With this decision, the Federal Government has sent a strong signal that it prioritises stakeholder concerns, protects businesses, and promotes sustainable economic growth.
The aviation industry, which plays a vital role in connectivity and trade, now has an opportunity to reposition itself for competitiveness in the global market.
