President of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI), Ms. Barbara Dunn, has announced the formation of the West Africa Society of Air Safety Investigators (WESASI). The new chapter was officially established on September 30, 2024, with all necessary documentation completed.
It was jointly led by BAGAIA and the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau, a process that began in August 2023. Commissioner of BAGAIA, Engineer Charles Erhueh, expressed gratitude for the ISASI Council’s approval of the newly accepted chapter. He praised Ms. Dunn and former NSIB DG, Engineer Akin Olateru, for their significant contributions to the initiative’s success. Also, he praised Mr. Khalid Walid Al Dewani – Director-Air Accident Investigation UAE for his efforts.
They initially discussed the initiative to establish the West Africa Society of Air Safety Investigators during last year’s ISASI meeting.
Meanwhile, Mr. Akwasi Agyeibi Prempeh, Commissioner of Ghana’s Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau, will lead WESASI as President. Prempeh will manage the chapter’s affairs while adhering to ISASI’s ethical values and professional codes of conduct. As a regional branch of ISASI, WESASI will focus on advancing air safety through collaboration among West African aviation professionals.
Additionally, the West Africa Society of Air Safety Investigators will allow experts to share experiences, knowledge, and ideas related to accident investigation.
Furthermore, this chapter will facilitate knowledge exchange, organize seminars, and publish research and reports on aviation safety in the region. Engineer Erhueh added, “This chapter will undoubtedly strengthen the region’s air safety culture, helping to prevent future accidents.”
WESASI offers significant benefits, including membership access to a vast network of experienced aviation professionals such as investigators, engineers, and pilots. Members will gain opportunities to network, enhance their professional recognition, and develop their careers within the aviation safety sector. Moreover, WESASI will support the development of investigative skills and contribute to air accident prevention in West Africa.
