Lagos Airport Hotel

Millions of naira was lost today as portions of the Lagos Airport Hotel, located on Awolowo Way, Ikeja was earlier today engulfed in flames.

As at the time of posting this report, the reason for the fire has yet to be determined but rooms 270, 271, 273 and the entire computer sections of the (banquet hall), Osun Hall, and Harold Kitchen have been razed.

The general manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Mr. Michael Akindele who confirmed the report said the agency received an alert about the incident via the emergency number of Lagos State 767/112.

“This prompted the quick response of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) of LASEMA and other stakeholders including the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service, and the Nigeria Police Force to the scene of the incident.

“Investigation carried out by the ERT at the scene could not ascertain the real cause of the inferno but a source confirmed suspected power surge from one part of the banquet section of the Banquet Hall of the Hotel,” he said.

Akindele also said the Lagos State Fire Service from Alausa Station and Ikeja were able to combat the fire from spreading to adjoining structures within the Hotel complex.

He added that there was no loss of life or injury sustained by anyone. However, he said “properties worth millions of naira were destroyed by the inferno; three rooms (rooms 270,271,272) on the second floor of Harold building were affected, the entire computer section of the (banquet hall), Osun Hall, and Harold Kitchen was totally destroyed by the inferno.”

Akindele said the adjoining structures such as Harold Building and all other buildings in the compound were salvaged

He added that appropriate agencies would conduct a proper investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire.

Akindele urged companies and property owners to ensure they put in place emergency response plan and safety precautions to avert fire incidents.
