Smoke billowing from the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri

THE Arrival Hall of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri today experienced a fire incident that affected some parts of the terminal building about 1400hours today.

Eye witness reports say the fire started around 2:10pm and damaged equipment and infrastructure, before officers of the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services Department of FAAN arrived and assisted in salvaging the situation.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in a statement confirmed the accident but stated there was no casualty and normal operations has since resumed at the airport.

It informed passengers and the general public that FAAN has commenced preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident.

As at time of this report, the cause of the fire is yet to be determined but the airport authority has said it would keep the general public abreast with its ARFFS findings.

A source who witnessed the fire said it happened at the arrival hall of the airport where the authority was carrying out renovation work.

He said, “It would have wreaked more havoc but for the arrival of men of the fire service.
