AS part of efforts to evaluate and ascertain the level of preparedness of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria is currently staging a mock emergency exercise.
This exercise, which is happening now at 8.20pm, July 27 2018 is aimed at evaluating and ascertaining the airport’s level of preparedness in case of emergencies.
In this vein the airport authority has called for calm and wishes to inform airport users and the general public that the mock exercise is in conformity with the Standards and Recommended Practices on safety.
Consequently, the Authority will like to appeal to the public, especially those residing around the airport not to entertain any fear, as the exercise is only a mock.
Nigeria, being a signatory to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) conventions is bound to implement the required standards and recommended practices to ensure smooth airport operations.
It is mandatory for all certified airports to develop and execute a Crisis & Emergency Response Plan (CERP). As per ICAO standards all airports must conduct a Full Scale Airport Emergency Exercise every two years.
The Full Scale Airport Emergency Exercise provides the framework which enables airport and community fire protection, security, medical and other resource to join in an effective, coordinated response to airport emergencies.
The purpose of an Airport Emergency Exercise is to ensure the adequacy of the following:
- To evaluate the response and coordination of all personnel
- To develop emergency plans and procedures
- To make sure emergency equipment is fully working
- To test communications
