The Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI) presented demands to FAAN for improved safety measures and maximizing revenue opportunities. The group seeks enhanced passenger comfort, security, and infrastructure standards at Nigerian airports.
During a meeting with FAAN’s management, led by Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, ASRTI called for strict compliance with Service Level Agreements. Additionally, ASRTI emphasized the need for better comfort for all airport users, including the physically challenged, who require separate facilities.
ASRTI also requested regulation of concessionaires’ access to new terminals and monitoring devices to ensure duty-free shops sell approved items. “For traveler health and safety, and international best practices, FAAN must evolve certification processes and track retail sales,” Onitiju stated.
Moreover, Onitiju highlighted the urgent need to address the rat issue at Lagos airport’s new terminal, which poses a health hazard. He also proposed relocating the airport toll gate to improve revenue generation and operational efficiency.
Responding, Mrs. Kuku thanked ASRTI for their contributions and described them as a vital pressure group in the industry. She noted that ongoing infrastructure projects already consider the needs of physically challenged passengers.
Kuku also mentioned FAAN’s revalidation process for concessionaires and ongoing reviews of retail operators to ensure standards. FAAN is addressing challenges with airport security and cargo section issues, while also filling gaps in fire simulator training.
Regarding the dilapidated road linking FAAN Training School to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Kuku said Lagos State will contribute to repairs. Some major projects, like perimeter fencing, may require federal involvement, though progress is underway.
FAAN’s Director of Special Duties, Mr. Henry Agbebire, confirmed that they are addressing the rat issue, a health hazard and embarrassment.
Mrs. Kuku presented a plaque of appreciation to the ASRTI President, who responded with the book “Aviation Round Table @20: The Journey So Far.”
ASRTI is Nigeria’s leading aviation NGO, focused on advancing the sector through consistent government collaboration and stakeholder knowledge sharing.
