There is a need for training and retraining of personnel if proper integration between man and machine to provide effective and successful transition from Aeronautical Information System to Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) is to be achieved, according to Aeronautical Information Services Association of Nigeria (AISAN)
National President of the body, Engr. Babatunde Shittu made this known while heralding the celebration of 2016 AIS Day stating that the much-needed blend between personnel and technology will provide for effective operation in a seamless environment of zero tolerance or delays in safety critical aeronautical information dissemination as a mandatory requirement.
According to Engr. Shittu, the first stage of AIS automation project was at its completing hurdle hence the this year celebration will be used to sensitize its members on May 17, 2016
“Annex 15 to the ICAO Convention on International Civil Aviation. The service was created on 15th May, 1953 as an array of services rendered to Pilots and other relevant ATM communities, such as Air Traffic Control, Air Traffic Engineers, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Military, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Meteorology etc, to enable the safety of Air Navigation. AIS entails collecting, collation, editing and dissemination of aeronautical Information. Without this service, a Pilot would be flying into the unknown” he harped.
He said with AIS automation, all AIS/MAP products will be in one single database and capability to exchange any data with the global aviation community as may be desired.
Shittu explained that it will increase speed, accuracy, efficiency and cost effectiveness of aeronautical information services and further ensure standardization of procedures, products and services to end users of aeronautical information.
“Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) provides one of the most vital roles in support of international civil aviation, ensuring the flow of information necessary for the safety, regularity and efficiency of international air navigation”.
It is the means for collecting, validating, storing, maintaining and disseminating aeronautical data to support real-time aviation activities.
The AISAN president noted that the role and importance of aeronautical information / data has changed significantly with the implementation of RNAV, RNP and airborne computer-based navigation systems.
He explained that the system being data dependent, it has become the necessary critical components of the system.
The AIS will be marked in Nigeria on 16th May 2016 at the NCAA Annex, Lagos.
