THE Flight Crew Association of Nigeria (FCAN) has advised on the reporting of aviation incidents and accidents and the circulation of such unprofessional and speculative reportage as it concerns these incidents and accidents.
FCAN made this call in a statement sent to Nigerianflightdeck.com advising that no media house or non-specialist should report on the causes of any crash as that responsibility lies solely with the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) which is already on top of the situation.
The statement issued by Captain Robert Roland for FCAN also urged the media and other non-professionals to desist from misguiding the general public with statements that do not serve anyone’s interest against the heels of the Air Peace aircraft accident last week.
“The Flight Crew Association of Nigeria (FCAN) hereby responds to the several contradictory information in circulation on social media and other media platforms on the recent Air Peace aircraft event.
“Aviation incidents are usually well investigated and not based on media reports.
“The body responsible for investigating and reporting the cause of any aircraft accident or incident in Nigeria is the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB); and certainly not the media houses or non-specialists.
“The AIB is responsible for providing preliminary reports wherein the probable cause is determined as guided by ICAO Annex 13.
The carriage of passengers by commercial Nigerian carriers is operated with “safety” as the watch word, and as Pilots, we do not compromise on safety.
“Hence, the general public should not be misguided by information from media publications which are mostly mere conjectures not serving the fair interest of anyone, especially the pilots who are tasked with conveying lives and cargo.
FCAN called on the public to monitor the AIB website http://aib.gov.ng for a more concise and plausible information on this and other incidents.
