…unions sheathe swords over welfare
Regional flights from and to the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA2) has not commenced as both managements of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) both confirmed that Bi- Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL) has not been granted approval.
A meeting was called for Monday evening due to the union’s planned protest to demand for workers welfare and warn FAAN over alleged planned regional flight by one of its concessionaires Bi-Courtney Aviation (BASL) from the MMA2.

The MMA2 Terminal which is also meant for such operations (regional) however has not been issued approval according to feelers from the meeting, meaning that no airline can commence operations from there for the time being.
NCAA spokesman had given the modalities for the commencement of such operations which include all the paraphernalia of an international airport terminal facility and agencies such as immigrations, customs, NDLEA, Plant Quarantine, and AVSEC of which are not present at the moment at the terminal.
However, a source claims that although the MMA2 has not been approved yet, it is in the advance stages of getting that approval as it has crossed most of the requirements off its list.
Other reasons that would incur the industrial unrest were also thrashed out at the meeting.
In a communique singed by leaders of three aviation unions and the management team of FAAN at the end of their meeting Monday in Lagos and obtained by our reporter, FAAN has also agreed to increase staff allowances and claims for workers in the organisation.
The unions signatories include, Kehinde Rotimi, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria ATSSSAN, Olayinka Abioye National Union of Air Transport Employees NUATE, and Emeka Njoku National Union of Pensioners NUP while, FAAN was represented by Mc Abraham Inajoh and BJ Adeyemi for director and manager human resources respectively.
With this development, FAAN has accepted to meet the workers’ demands by commencing the payment of furniture grants by January 2016 and the modalities for the payment of 27% salary arrears will be worked out before Monday December 7th 2015.
On the issue of promotion exercise, FAAN management promised to conclude all issues relating to promotion by December 17 2015, while every qualified employee of the agency will be given opportunity to participate in the promotion exercise to be strictly done in accordance with the condition of service by involving the unions.
The meeting also resolved, to evolve modalities for the payment of the accrued pension benefits from Pencom while the unions will partner FAAN to recover all debts owed the organisation.
